Extras, Extras…Read All About Them

Want to find out which airlines are the worst offenders when it comes to charging for extras before you book your flights to Lanzarote? Then help is at hand, as the Civil Aviation Authority has created a summary of optional charges covering extras such as luggage and in flight meals. Which can end up adding a lot of money to the standard ticket price. Enabling British holidaymakers to work out which airline is really the cheapest once all extras have been added.

The CAA is keen to create greater transparency for consumers as different airlines are currently able to pursue different business models. Which means that charges are not standardised across the industry. This leaves many holidaymakers feeling less than sunny when they book a flight – as the final price that they pay for their holiday abroad often varies greatly from the initial cost advertised on many airlines websites.

According to the Transport Secretary Justine Greening “Consumers want to know that the price on the label is what they’ll end up paying. But many air tickets seem to come with unexpected charges for everything from choosing a seat to just ‘booking’ the ticket."

"I hope this new information from the CAA will help, which is why we are legislating to give the CAA even more powers to ensure transparency for consumers. Ultimately, however, it’s time that airlines were far clearer cut with passengers about these add-on charges in the first place.”
