Island Gears Up For 2012 Celebrations

A proposal is being submitted to the European Union to have Lanzarote declared as a 'European Cultural Space' in 2012, as part of the celebrations to mark the seven hundredth anniversary of Genovese explorer Lancelotto Malocello's arrival on the island.

The activities planned to mark this event will also take place in Italy and the Spanish mainland and will probably include the twinning of Lanzarote with the Italian town of Varazze. Malocello's rediscovery of Lanzarote is now also seen as the main factor that led to the other islands in the Canarian archipelago being visited by European explorers in subsequent years.

The proposal is being formulated by the councillor for the island's historical legacy at the Government of Lanzarote, Juan Antonio de la Hoz in conjunction with the director of the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism, Pedro Fraile. Other officials involved in the consultation include Oswaldo Betancort, the mayor of Teguise, the councillor for Culture in Teguise, Olivia Duque and two councillors from the Ayuntamiento of Arrecife, Francisca Toledo and Eva de Anta de Benito. Other bodies who were included in the consultative meeting last week were the Association of Italian Friends and the Scientific Committee.
