Lanzarote's Arrecife airport is one of four hubs in Spain to have been selected by AENA to trial an innovative new means of powering their on site transportation. As the Spanish airport authority team up with General Electric and Innovates Solar to create a fleet of vehicles fuelled by solar powered electric carports.

American based company General Electric has teamed up with Innovates Solar to and Spanish energy supplier Endesa to create and supply a solar powered electric vehicle charging infrastructure at four Spanish airports; Madrid, Barcelona, Palma and Lanzarote. AENA are keen to reduce their expenditure on conventional fuels and plan to add the electric vehicles into their existing operation, charging the vehicles on cheaper off peak overnight tariffs.

The pilot scheme is expected to run for three years with a view to eventually switching the entire fleet over to solar powered electric vehicles.
