Tourist Centres See 9% Rise in Visitor Numbers

Lanzarote’s main tourist attractions, the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism, saw more than 2.63 million visitors pass through their doors during 2011. This constitutes a rise of 9.34% in comparison with figures collated for 2010.

This level of attendance by holiday makers at the Centres is a reflection of the higher number of visitors who came to Lanzarote during last year. As in previous years, the Timanfaya National Park received the largest quantity of visitors, with a total of 879,000 people taking the volcanic route.

The Jameos del Agua was visited by 684,000 tourists, whilst its close neighbour the Cueva de Los Verdes received some 380,000 visitors. The next most visited Centre was the Mirador del Rio, with 351,000 people passing through its doors, whilst the Cactus Garden registered more than 288,000 tickets sold. Somewhat behind the other Centres was the Castillo de San Jose, which only received some 55,400 visitors in total for the year.

Figures for the final month of 2011 reveal that 178,000 tourists visited one of the Centres during December, the best level of attendance during this month than for the previous two years.
