New TUI Tour Buses Run Into Trouble

A new tourist bus route proposed by TUI has run into difficulties with the Lanzarote Government, as officials have imposed several conditions be met before the service can get underway.

TUI aims to introduce a new tour route visiting the main tourist attractions around the island, with a fixed timetable as if it were a public bus service. This new way of taking tourists to the principal points of interest on the island is called ‘Lanzarote Vision’ and is meant to begin in February.

The idea behind it is similar to the tourist bus services that operate in many European cities, taking visitors along routes that pass many of the most important attractions each location has. TUI had hoped to use recordings in various languages to get round the need for a tourist guide to be on board each of the routes that is proposed.

However, the Cabildo of Lanzarote insists that this type of service will need to have a qualified tourist guide on board each time. The government has also asked that a clear outline of which bus stops the company would be using and that the pricing structure of the new routes is in line with the legally established prices for this type of activity. At present, the proposals have yet to be resolved, having been submitted in September 2010 but officials are adamant that the new service is not legally permitted to begin next month
