Atlantis Disappears...Again...

Philosophers and historians have long debated the possible physical whereabouts of the mythical lost city of Atlantis. With the Canaries long cited as a possible location. This debate has been further fuelled in recent years by the appearance of unusual grid lines on Google Earth – but these have now been revealed to have been created by a software error and removed from the latest edition!

Since 2009 Google Earth has shown a distinct grid pattern, located on the ocean floor off the coast of the Canary Islands. Fuelling centuries old speculation that the lost continent was in fact located in this part of the Atlantic.

The Atlantis myth started with Plato, who postulated around 360BC that there was vast city located just beyond the mouth of the Mediterranean. Despite the fact that he had never seen the city, which is said to have been submerged by the sea in 24 hours. Claiming instead to that the story has been passed down from generation to generation.

Today few people believe in the Atlantis myth – including researches at Google. Who found that the grid patterns was in fact created by mixing a low grade scan of the sea bed with the patterns created above the water by the ships carrying out the sonar scans. However all is not lost for the few remaining believers. As Google have so far only successfully scanned around 15% of the oceans floor.
