Bright Start to 2012 Continues

The bright start to 2012 for Lanzarote’s tourist industry continues with the release of the latest foreign tourist arrival figures from ISTAC (The Canarian Institute of Statistics) – which reveal that visitor numbers increased last month by 4.45% versus January 2011.

Some observers feared that foreign tourist arrivals could fall during the first quarter of this year due to the weak economic outlook in a number of Lanzarote’s key tourist markets. But these fears appear to be unfounded, as passenger numbers rose by 4.45% during January, as a total of 129,177 foreign tourists touched down at Arrecife airport.

These figures build on last year’s impressive return to form for the island – as Lanzarote enjoyed its best year since 2004, with foreign passenger numbers soaring by 17.32%. And these latest figures suggest that this momentum could well be maintained in 2012. Not least as ongoing turmoil in the Middle East looks set to continue diverting winter sun tourists to the Canaries.

Arrivals from Germany – Lanzarote´s second largest market - rose by just over 8% with 29,869 arrivals. Whilst Dutch numbers climbed by an impressive 85.04%. However the number of British and Irish tourists remained largely static – with UK arrivals down slightly by 0.47% to 58.938 passengers and Irish visitors up by 0.87% to 12,148. Whilst this upswing in foreign tourist arrivals must also be viewed against the backdrop of falling visitor numbers from the Spanish mainland, down by 5.8% in January to 32,470 arrivals.
