Tourist Spending Up

Tourist spending rose by 5% during the first trimestre of 2012 in comparison with the same period in 2011, according to the Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC). In total, 424 million Euros were spent by tourists visiting Lanzarote both in their country of origin, when booking their holidays and whilst they were actually on the island.

However, whilst the overall amount spent by visitors to the most easterly Canarian island has risen in total, the figures reveal that more of the money was spent on goods and services relating to the holiday in the country of origin. Whilst the amount tourists were actually using to purchase items whilst in Lanzarote has fallen during the same period.

Between the beginning of January and the end of March, €290 million was paid out by tourists in their home countries, an increase of 10.46% more than in the first three months of 2011. And during the same three month period, tourists who were visiting the island spent €134 million euros, 5% less than recorded in the first quarter of 2011.

Leading the way in generating tourist revenue were visitors from the United Kingdom, who accounted for some €175 million, which constitutes a rise of 17.41% more than was spent by the British market for the same period in 2011. Of this, 120 million Euros was spent in the UK on flights, holidays and accommodation, whilst 54.5 million was spent in Lanzarote.

The German tourist market actually spent less during this period than at the same time last year, with €68.9 million spent in total, a fall of 3%, and with only €15.8 million of this amount used in Lanzarote, whilst the remaining €53 million paid out in Germany for holidays and flights.

Amongst Spanish tourists there was a considerable increase, with an additional 18.61% spent by this group in the first quarter of 2012 in comparison with the same period in 2011. The split between spending at home and whilst on holiday was less pronounced as well, with €23.1 million generated on the mainland and €15.5 million spent whilst visitors were in Lanzarote.
