May Tourist Arrivals Up By 2.76%

Lanzarote enjoyed a positive upswing in tourist arrivals during May according to figures released recently by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics. Reversing the negative downward trend recorded during February, March and April – as a total of 144,457 holidaymakers touched down at Arrecife airport – an increase in arrivals of 2.76%.

Despite the gloomy economic outlook across Europe the number of tourists visiting Lanzarote rose by nearly 3% during May, the first month since January that the island has registered a year on year increase in arrivals.

Figures for Lanzarote’s two largest tourist markets remained largely stable, with British visitor numbers reaching 72,844, down slightly on the May 2011 figure of 75,996. Whilst German arrivals rose slightly year on year from 20,475 passengers in May 2011 to 21,272 in May 2012. Irish arrivals however fell sharply year on year – down from 15,162 passengers in May 2011 to 12,354 in May 2012.
