General Strike Threatens Possible Delays & Closures

The wave of strike action planned across Southern Europe for this Wednesday November 14th looks likely to have some impact on Lanzarote too, according to spokespeople for Arrecife airport and the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism, with delays and closures possible. Although no official has yet been able to give any clear indication as to the scale of action possible, as at this stage they simply do not know to what degree the strike will be supported by island based workers.

The general strike taking place on Wednesday, 14th November could however affect services across Lanzarote, with delays and possible cancellations anticipated for the airport at Arrecife. At present, airport officials are unable to confirm to what degree their services are likely to be affected due to the nature of the strike action. So tourists are advised to liaise with their airline or booking agent if traveling into our out of the island on Wednesday 14th.

There is also the possibility that the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism on Lanzarote will have reduced staffing levels on Wednesday, as all employees have the right to strike. However, until Wednesday itself, it is impossible for the administrative departments of the island’s main tourist attractions to predict how many of their staff will exercise this right.

In addition, bus services across the island are likely to be running a reduced number of lines, although at present the company Intercity Bus was unable to say exactly which services would be affected.

Strike action is being taken across Portugal, Greece and Spain on November 14th as trade unions express their opposition to the austerity measures being imposed by the European Union, IMF and European Central Bank.
