Foreign Tourist Arrivals Fall By 2.89% in January

The number of foreign tourists visiting Lanzarote fell by nearly 3% last month versus 2012 figures, according to the latest data just released by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics. Thanks to a large fall in the number of German holidaymakers visiting the island.

In total, 125,444 foreign tourists touched down at Arrecife airport in January – versus 129,177 passengers in the same month last year. Visitor numbers from the UK, the island’s largest tourist market, remained largely stable – down by just 1.2% from 59,514 arrivals in Jan 2012 to 58,781 last month. Whilst the Irish market registered a decent increase, up by 11.8% from 12,191 arrivals to 13,625.

Domestic tourism was also on the up last month, as the number of visitors from the Spanish mainland rose by over 19% from 20,875 arrivals in January 2012 to 24,909 last month.

Figures from Germany – Lanzarote’s second largest source of foreign tourists - however were very disappointing, especially given the budget and promotional activity expended on this market over the last year, as the number of holidaymakers fell by just over 22% from 33,803 arrivals in 2012 to just 26,206 last month.
