Canaries Stand Firm Against Oil Prospecting

Attending the meeting were the President of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, the President of Lanzarote’s Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés and the councillor for Culture in Fuerteventura, Juan Jiménez. Pedro San Ginés was at pains to stress that resistance to the intentions of the petro-chemical company Repsol crosses all parties and political beliefs.

In addition, he announced that by mid May there would be a presentation made against the authorization granted by the Minister of Industry for prospecting without prior environmental impact studies having been carried out.

The main purpose of the press conference was however to call for the local population of the archipelago to remain united against the ´threat to our common interests´, citing that it was not a ´political question but one that was incompatible with the model of development that has been chosen for the islands, which could mortgage our future and that of future generations´.

Paulino Rivero went on to state that although the take-up of renewable energy sources had been slow in the Canaries, now there was a firm commitment to this type of development which clearly made the activity of the petrol industry in Canarian waters incompatible with tourism.
