International Flights Fuel 11% Rise in Airport Traffic

An increase in international flights drove an 11.3% rise in overall traffic at Arrecife airport last month, according to the latest data just released by AENA. As a total of 270,719 passengers touched down on Lanzarote in May.

This percentage increase in passenger numbers outperformed all other airport in the archipelago, with the exception of Tenerife South. Where 529, 479 people arrived during May, an increase of 12.1%. Whilst Gran Canaria saw a smaller increase of 4%.

The vast majority of visitors to the Canary Islands during May were from the European Union, with a total of 1,269,351 travellers in all arriving from various points around Europe, excluding visitors from mainland Spain, who numbered 913,399. Only 99,513 visitors came from outside the EU zone. The eight airports which operate across the Canarian archipelago therefore saw a total of 2.31 million passengers arriving during the fifth month of this year. And whilst the figures show a rise in the number of visitors during last month, the accumulated total so far for the first five months of 2013 demonstrate a decline of 5.4% when compared with January to May 2012, with only 13.15 million having visited so far this year against 13.91 million in 2012.
