Lanzarote Tourist Numbers Hit Record High in 2014

The number of tourists taking a holiday here on Lanzarote continued to soar in 2014, as nearly 2.4 million visitors touched down at Arrecife Airport, according to the latest data just released by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics, a figure that represents an increase of 10.5% on 2013.

The island’s key markets continued to perform well, with visitor numbers from the UK topping the 1 million mark for the first time ever, followed by arrivals from Spain (305,668), Germany (290,444) and Eire (209,646).

Newer markets also continue to develop nicely, thanks largely to the creation of more routes and services to Lanzarote by budget flight operators such as Ryanair. France is the fastest growing of these markets, recording 88,588 arrivals last year, an increase of 718% since 2010. Whilst Italian and Dutch passenger numbers grew by 162.3% and 115.3% respectively over the same period.

Another interesting trend is the rapid expansion in Polish visitor numbers since 2010, which are up by 315%, reflecting the growth of the Polish population in the UK and the greater ease of accessibility this gives them to Lanzarote. Visitor numbers from other national markets have also risen over the last four years, with the sole exception of Austria (down by 24.4%) and Spain (down by 26.9%).
