Splash Down - Floating Water Park Opens In Puerto del Carmen

Lanzarote’s most popular holiday resort boasts a new, family friendly facility from this weekend as a floating water park opens for the first time in Puerto del Carmen.

Located in the shallows just off the main beach of Playa Grande the new water park boasts a variety of aquatic attractions such as toboggans, elastic beds and slides, and occupies an area just out at sea of some 600 square metres.

The facility opens this coming Saturday and admission will cost €5 per person. The company behind the new attraction beat five other competitors in a tender put out by the Mayor of Tias, whose municipality incorporates Puerto del Carmen. They already operate a similar installation in Alicante, which they have had to adapt for use here in the stronger currents of the Atlantic.

Whilst the water park may prove to be a crowd pleaser with tourists the reaction of locals to this new installation has been, at best, mixed. With some residents voicing concern that it’s an eyesore which is best off kept in the Med and which is not at all in keeping with Lanzarote’s status as an unspoiled, protected UNESCO biosphere reserve.
