Stansted Workers Announce Bank Holiday Strike Action

Tourists hoping to escape the UK from London Stansted for some late summer sunshine abroad face the prospect of delays and disruptions over the Bank Holiday Weekend. As baggage scanners at the Essex hub have just announced plans to stage two consecutive strikes in a row over pay on Sunday August 23rd and on Bank Holiday Monday.

30 workers, who are employed by private contractor Mitie and are members of the GMB union have rejected a 1.5% pay increase offer and will abandon their posts at as they seek to secure a 3% rise, walking out on Sunday 23rd from 3.45am to 1pm and on Monday 24st from 3.45am to 11.59pm.

Stansted has become an important hub for flights to Lanzarote in recent years with both Ryanair and Thomas Cook operating services across these dates.

This strike action is likely to add to the expected travel chaos in London that week as Tube workers plan to go ahead with industrial action from the 25th to 28th of August that could effectively close the underground network for the best part of a week.
