LEFT LUGGAGE Baggage Handlers Plan Strike Action

Baggage handlers at Lanzarote’s international airport have announced their intention to take strike action over the coming weeks in protest at their current pay and conditions.

The handlers all work for Swissport, who are contracted to process baggage for most of the major airlines flying in and out of Arrecife.  And the proposed strike dates are October 18th, 20th, 22nd, 25th and 27th, running all day from 06.00 through until midnight.

Should these strikes go ahead then travelers can expect disruption and delays.  And in the past similar strike action has also been accompanied by audible and visible protests and pickets, so further adding to the potential disruption in the departures hall.

The airlines that are directly affected by the strike are British Airways, Jet2, easyJet and Norwegian.  However it is possible that industrial action could also impact upon the arrival and departure times of other carriers.

Swissport was recently sold to the HNA Group, owners of China's fourth largest airline, and employs 60,000 staff in 45 countries around the world.
