ONLINE ISLAND Free WiFi For Airport and Tourist Centres

Tourists visiting Lanzarote will soon be able to get online for free at both Arrecife airport and the island’s main Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism.  As local authorities press ahead with plans to improve internet connectivity for holidaymakers.

As from Monday the 19th of October visitors to the island will be able to enjoy free WiFi for up to 30 minutes at the airport, which is part of a broader initiative across Spain to provide internet access at all of the country’s main aviation hubs.

Plans are also afoot to create a WiFi network and free internet access at all of the key points of tourist interest around the island. This is part of a new strategy to ‘digitally transform’ Lanzarote into an ‘intelligent’ tourist destination. The new network will also carry information about air and water quality on the island, noise pollution and other environmental factors, helping to tie in the initiative with the island’s existing pedigree as a Biosphere Reserve.

Online payments will also be facilitated, meaning that visitors to the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism can purchase tickets using their mobile devices, as well as souvenirs and gifts from the shops within the attractions.

It’s estimated that the project will take 18 months to complete and cost around €8.2 million with funding being supplied by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.
