BIG CHEESE Spreading The Word At The World Cheese Awards

Word of the quality of Canarian goats cheese continues to spread. As the archipelago’s artisan makers pulled in the plaudits at the prestigious World Cheese Awards in Birmingham last week, whilst also walking off with a cracking total of 18 medals.

The World Cheese Fair is the World Cup of the cheese world and this year’s event attracted just shy of 3,000 entries to the highly pungent NEC exhibition centre in England’s second city. Judges then whittled this mammoth entry down to a final 16, before finally granting top of the cheeseboard status to a Swizz produced gruyere.

However Canarian cheeses also managed to pick up a healthy chunk of awards, racking up a total of 18 gongs across gold, silver and bronze categories. The biggest cheeses in the Canaries originated from Gran Canaria and Tenerife, whilst Lanzarote’s highest ranking representative was Secreta Del Majo, created at Finca de Uga, which won a silver medal.
