OFF THE RAILS Gatwick Express Suspended For Christmas

Travel chaos at Christmas is becoming as much part of the UK festive experience as turkey and cranberry sauce. And this year it’s the turn of tourists who are flying out of Gatwick to bear the brunt, as the airport’s express rail service from Victoria grinds to a halt for a whopping ten days from 10pm on Christmas Eve.

The closure and paralysis of the entire London to Brighton line is all down to Network Rail works taking place between East Croydon and Redhill, which are expected to impact upon the travel plans of thousands of winter sun seekers heading for Lanzarote and other popular destinations.

Bus replacement services will be in operation throughout until 4am on Monday January 4th and holidaymakers have been advised to allow an additional journey time of at least 90 minutes. Not least as roads such as the M25 are also expected to be extremely busy, with an estimated 31 million car journeys taking place across the festive season according to RAC estimates.

Passengers heading out from Heathrow also face disruption and delays as overground rail links to the airport will be severed for four days from Christmas Day.
