RECORD BREAKERS Tourist Arrivals Hit New High In 2015

Foreign tourist arrivals soared by nearly 5% last year, according to the latest data just released by the Spanish airport authority AENA, as a total of 2,193,273 holidaymakers touched down at Arrecife during the course of 2015.

These record breaking figures are testament to Lanzarote’s on going and growing popularity as a tourist destination and are also illustrative of just how well the island’s tourist sector has recovered from the darkest days of the recession, when foreign arrivals fell to just 1,367,449 passengers in 2009.

Since that low water mark arrivals have now increased by an amazing 60%, a recovery that outperforms most of the other islands in the Canaries as well as many other destinations in Spain and Europe.

British tourism has played an integral role in this recovery, with arrivals from the UK totaling 1,162,430 passengers during 2015, accounting for 52% of all foreign holidaymakers last year.

The German market, Lanzarote’s second largest, expanded by 12%, whilst Eire and France, the island’s third and fourth largest sources of foreign arrivals respectively also recorded substantial positive growth.

This upward trend looks set to continue this year, fuelled by growing international awareness of the island’s unique offering and ongoing upheaval in other former competitor destinations such as Egypt and Tunisia.
