DEPTH CHARGE Catch The Big Drop In Playa Blanca

Lanzarote’s newest attraction, The Atlantic Museum, is starting to take shape just off the coast of Playa Blanca in the south of the island. And this weekend tourists will be able to watch as the first life size human sculptures are submerged in the ocean.

The Atlantic Museum is the brainchild of British born artist Jason deCaires Taylor, who creates underwater installations around the world, such as the amazing Silent Evolution, which is sited just off the coast of Cancun in Mexico.

These installations are primarily designed as tourist attractions, as his statues are submerged in relatively shallow waters, enabling easy viewing for snorkelers and glass bottom boats. However, the shallow depth also encourages coral growth, which means that the installation will evolve and grow over time, whilst also diverting tourists away from depleted and fragile reefs elsewhere around the world.

Thirty five of his sculptures will be submerged this Sunday, January 31st, close to the Castillo de los Coloradas in Playa Blanca.
