CHEESED OFF Local Dairy Linked To Salmonella Outbreak
A total of 31 people on Lanzarote have been affected by a salmonella outbreak over the last two weeks, with a local cheese maker, Flor de Teguise, being fingered as a possible source of the contamination.
Local health authorities are currently scrambling to identify the origin of the outbreak of salmonella typhimurium and have been conducting sample tests on Flor de Teguise’s products, which to date have not produced any definitive results.
As a result the dairy’s cheeses are still available for sale around the island, although further distribution has recently been restricted. Salmonella typhimurium can cause gastroenterisis in humans and mammals but local authorities have stressed that to date nobody has been hospitalized as a result of the outbreak.
