MAKING WAVES WWF Lobbies For Whale Sanctuary Off Lanzarote

The World Wildlife Fund are pressing for the creation of a whale and dolphin sanctuary in the waters that lie between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. In order to both provide protection for these species and to bring a definitive end to the prospect of further oil exploration in the region.

Spanish petro giant Repsol’s hugely controversial plans to drill for oil in the Atlantic just off the coast of both island’s dried up when initial exploratory investigations came up empty. But the company retains the rights to continue drilling in the area until the end of 2017, a prospect the WWF wants to eradicate.

To date the WWF has collected close to 50,000 signatures against any further prospecting and they announced last week, on World Whale Day, that they will continue to lobby island authorities for a designated sanctuary as a matter of urgency.
