OFF PLAN Papagayo Arena Hotel Remains Illegal

Another hotel faces the threat of partial demolition as the Playa Blanca planning pantomime continues apace in the south of the island. And this time it's the Papagayo Arena, one of the ugliest edifices ever built on Lanzarote, that is in the spotlight.

Operated by Sandos Hotels and also known as the Papagayo Beach Resort Hotel this enormous eyesore not only fails to please aesthetically but was built far too close to the beaches at Papagatyo, an area of outstanding natural beauty.  Now the hotel has also fallen foul of the local council's planning regulations as it blocks pedestrian coastal access from the resort to the beaches.

As a result the local council of Yaiza has given the hotels owners two months to present plans to rectify all current planning incursions. However, the practicality of such a decree remains highly debatable given the potentially negative impact that any large scale disruption could have on both the resort's and the island's public profile.

Indeed, similar obstacles have already been encountered by the High Court of the Canary Islands and the local council as they seek to rectify planning irregularities at other local hotels, such as the Princesa Yaiza, which has also been threatened with partial demolition in recent months.
