VEGGING OUT Veg Friendly Status For Arrecife

Lanzarote's capital, Arrecife, is hoping to become the first Veg Friendly city in the Canaries. As part of a new intitiative driven by the local tourist board that is designed to promote healthier eating habits whilst also helping local food producers.

According to the city's mayor, Rafael Juan Gonzalez, the goal is "to support and promote the inclusion of healthy habits by taking measures to help citizens and visitors to enjoy a choice of food and vegetarian lifestyle. Vegetarianism is growing exponentially throughout Europe and Arrecife is ahead, adapting to a greener, healthier and more respectful future."

The first fruits of this inititative will be the siting of Veg Friendly seals and signage in local bars and restaurants that offer vegetarian dishes. Whilst plans are also afoot to create a guide and app which will help tourists identify these establishments with ease when visiting the capital.
