IN THE FLESH Teguise Prohibits Nudism On Local Beaches

The local council in Teguise has passed a new byelaw prohibiting nudism within the boundaries of their municapility, which encompasses the neighbouring island of La Graciosa and popular naturist spots such as Charco del Palo and Famara.

In general the official attitude towards nudism on local beaches has always been reasonably relaxed and the sight of naked sunbathers barely raises an eyebrow amongst most locals, whilst in Charco del Palo nudism is de riguer. So the latest ordenance from the Mayor's office of Teguise has been met with considerable oppoistion, with some local politicians pointing out the obvious contradiction between the new law and the promotion of the naturist village of Charco del Palo on official websites.

It remains to be see how zealously the new edict will be enforced, but plans are afoot to site signage specifically outlawing nude sunbathing in key beachfront locations within the municipality.
