LEFT LUGGAGE Baggage Handlers Threaten Strike Action

Tourists visiting Lanzarote next week may find that their holiday is subjected to strike action at Arrecife airport. As Spain's largest trade union, the CCOO, has indicated that they will be calling a walk out of baggage handlers who are employed by the cargo company Swissport from Monday August 22nd.

Whilst not yet confirmed, the walk out has of course been timed to cause maximum disruption as August is one of the busiest months of the year at Arrecife airport, with an estimated 250,000 passengers passing through the terminals.

Should the strike go ahead then it is likely to cause delays to both inbound and outward services. And the following airlines all use Swissport's ground services, British Airways, Jet2, Monarch, Norwegian, Thomas Cook and Thomson Airways.

The strike is the latest episode in an ongoing wrangle between the union and employers over pay and conditions and has been called, according to CCOO, due to repeated breaches of operational procedures which have endangered the safety of workers.
