STRIKE ONE Airport Industrial Action Incident Free

Industrial action taken by baggage handlers at Arrecife airport yesterday failed to impact upon tourists, as both arrivals and departures operated without any significant incident.

However, further strike action is planned and could have far greater impact later in the week when more flights are operating, so increasing the possibility of delays and disruption to passengers. The strike has been called by employees of the ground handling services company Swissport, who are members of the CCOO, Spain's largest tarde union, who are protesting at working conditions and practices and an apparent refusal by employers to negotiate further on these points.

Swissport handle the baggage of around 85% of all flights into and out of the airport, inlcuding UK based airways Jet2, Monarch, Norwegian, Thomas Cook, BA and Thomson Airways. And on Monday only 16 of these flight services were operational. However the number of flights that could be affected will increase to 42 on Thursday, 30 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday.
