STRIKE TWO Walkout Delays Some Flights At Airport

The trade union behind the current series of strikes at Arrecife airport claim that up to 19 flights were disrupted by their industrial action last Thursday, causing delays of between one and two hours and affecting over 3,700 tourists.

The CCOO, Spain’s biggest trade union, is backing baggage handlers employed by Swissport in their current dispute with the company, resulting in a rolling, indefinite wave of action at the airport.

Initial reports suggested that passengers were initially unaffected at the start of the walkout last Monday, but the union is now claiming that their action is having an impact. As on a busy day for departures last Thursday 19 out of 42 flights were affected, resulting in delays of up to two hours. Whilst the last five flights of the day apparently left without any baggage being loaded on board whatsoever.

The dispute remains ongoing as the unions claim that management has no interest in negotiating a resolution to the conflict. So passengers travelling to and from the UK with Jet2, Monarch, Norwegian, Thomas Cook, BA and Thomson Airways may experience some further disruption.
