HAIL CESAR Airport To Be Renamed In Honour Of Manrique

Local politicians are planning to honour Lanzarote´s most famous inhabitant by renaming the island´s airport César Manrique Lanzarote. In order to heighten awareness internationally of the artist’s work and to further enhance the promotion of the island and it´s attractions to millions of international travellers.

Manrique had an enormous impact upon the evolution of modern day tourism on the island, steering Lanzarote down a relatively ecologically sound path, eschewing the erection of the sort of high rise hotel developments and endless ad hoardings that have blighted other Spanish holiday destinations.

The proposals echo similar schemes such as the renaming of the John Lennon Airport in Liverpool and also encompass a plan to create an annual César Manrique Day, which will celebrate the artist´s life and work every April 24th, the anniversary of his birthday.
