HEAVY WEATHER Storms Disrupt Tourist Flights

The recent stormy weather in the Canaries has created travel chaos on Lanzarote over the last couple of days, with a total of 25 flights, mostly international, diverted to other islands and ferry services cancelled.

Rain and high winds impacted heavily on flight services at Arrecife airport on Tuesday with 12 flights redirected to Fuerteventura and three to Gran Canaria whilst some flights were cancelled altogether. And Wednesday bought little respite either as a further 10 services were again diverted to neighbouring islands.

According to AENA the approach at Arrecife airport is relatively tricky for pilots at the best of times but conditions were rendered unmanageable over the last couple of days by low visibility and strong tailwinds, with some gusts recorded at around 70km per hour.

Conditions are now starting to improve, however Thomas Cook flight arrivals and departures to and from the island today are still subject to delays
