SAND STORM Puerto Del Carmen Loses Blue Flag Status

Which resort boasts the best beaches on Lanzarote? Costa Teguise tops the list in 2017, according to the FEE, organisers of the annual Blue Flag awards ahead of Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen.

The Blue Flag awards are bestowed each year by the Foundation for Environmental Education, who work in conjunction with the Ministry of Health in the Canary Islands. The awards are designed to encourage the highest possible environmental standards on beaches worldwide, measuring a variety of factors such as water cleanliness, accessibility and overall environmental friendliness.

This year, a total of five beaches (along with the marina at Puerto Calero) have made the final cut - one less than in 2016. With both Playa Grande and Pila de la Barilla in Puerto del Carmen being stripped of this status. Whilst Costa Teguise picks up two new Blue Flag awards for El Cuchillo and Playa Las Cucharas - both located in the heart of the resort. Matagorda and Los Pocillos will both be flying one blue flag apiece in 2017, along with the town centre beach in Playa Blanca.
