BLOW OUT Flights To Lanzarote Diverted By Strong Winds

Scores of flights to Lanzarote from the UK and across Europe were diverted by strong winds this weekend, with tourists enjoying an unplanned two centre break on both Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria as a result.

The winds really kicked in on Saturday afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 87km an hour according to the state meteorological agency AEMET. With 15 flights affected, including services from Leeds, Dublin, Birmingham and Newcastle, quickly swamping capacity at the airport on the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.

This in turn forced other flights from airports such as Manchester to land even further afield on Gran Canaria, much to the chagrin of some local residents - who fear being overtaken by their near neighbours at the expense of arrivals here, whilst also highlighting political inaction on airport expansions and enhancement projects.
