WILD WEATHER Wind, Waves and Possible Delays

AEMET, the state meteorological agency, has announced a yellow weather warning on Lanzarote as winds of up to 85km per hour are expected to hit the island this weekend.

Strong gusts of up to 75km are expected today, intensifying to up to 85 km per hour on Saturday. Creating much the same conditions that caused chaos for tourists last weekend, when scores of flights to Lanzarote from the UK and the rest of Europe were diverted to neighbouring islands with longer and more easily accessible runways, leaving disgruntled travelers grounded at Arrecife airport.

The situation is no better at sea, where storm force seven winds and waves of up to 5 metres are expected - conditions that are likely to lead to the cancelation of ferry crossings and maritime excursions.

Last weekend´s chaotic conditions at Arrecife airport resulted in numerous calls for an extension to the runway at Arrecife, which would then ensure that the island is able to cope with weather conditions that are not uncommon at many points during the course of the year.

Tourists can monitor the state of play at the airport by visiting our live flight departure and arrival information page.
