BOARDING PARTY Record Cruise Numbers Dock In Arrecife

Lanzarote is braced for a record number of arrivals by sea today – as an estimated 16,000 tourists and crew dock at the cruise liner port in Los Marmoles.

Just as tourist arrivals by air have boomed over the last twenty years the start of the cruise season is bringing the highest ever quantity of cruise passengers to the island in a single day. With five vessels dropping anchor at the island´s dedicated cruise port, including the Italian heavyweight Costa Favolosa, which cost over €500m to build when launched in 2010, carrying 3,800 passengers and over 1000 crew members.

Around 180,000 sea borne tourists visited Lanzarote during the first six months of the year and over the last 20 years cruise arrivals have expanded massively, from just 60 boats and 31,000 passengers in 1997 to 404 boats and 377,803 passengers last year.

As a result of this record breaking inflow tourist authorities have upweighted their help and information teams at the port, as well as in various points around the capital such as El Charco and the Casa de la Cultura. In order to ensure that all visitors gain the best possible impression of the island – despite the fact that Thursday is also a key departure day at the airport, stretching resources beyond the norm.
