BRITISH SHAREWAYS BA Sub-Let New Gatwick Services

British Airways has announced extra services from Gatwick to Lanzarote this summer. But tourists booking with the UK flag carrier may find themselves flying on another airlines planes, according to UK media reports.

British Airways last week announced their busiest summer schedule out of London Gatwick for a decade, with services to destinations such as the Canaries and mainland Spain upweighted, with the number of flights to Lanzarote increased to five per week.

However the carrier, which still boasts the UK’s largest fleet, were not so forthcoming about their proposed wet lease arrangements with other airlines. Which means unwary passengers could be booking BA but flying with another carrier altogether.

BA paid 50 million pounds to snap up the extra slots at Gatwick left vacant after the recent demise of Monarch Airlines. But without a huge increase in staff and aircraft at Gatwick the carrier will be forced to bring in crews and planes from other carriers, such as the little known Titan Airways.

The practice of wet leasing is pretty common in the aviation world. However given BA’s recent high profile PR issues industry observers are concerned that the UK flag carrier is in danger of creating more damage to their already tarnished brand.
