TWIN TRAGEDIES Lanzarote Rocked By Dual Disasters

Seven would be migrants and an Irish tourist lost their lives on Lanzarote over the last week in two separate tragic incidents…

On Monday a boat carrying 27 migrants pitched up in rough seas off the coast of Playa Bastian in Costa Teguise. The boat is thought to have set sail from Morocco on the previous Saturday, but without sufficient food or water on board to sustain the passengers.

Five were reportedly dead on arrival off Lanzarote, whilst a further two drowned whilst attempting to swim to shore, in highly distressing scenes witnessed by many locals and tourists. The remaining twenty occupants are currently being detained in police custody and reports have emerged this morning that one of these detainees has been identified as the skipper.

Elsewhere on the island an Irish teenager, Stephen O’Gara, just 18 years of age, died after a tragic accident involving his rented moped and another vehicle.
