RECORD BREAKER Tourist Arrivals Top 3 Million in 2017

Tourist arrivals on Lanzarote broke through the three million barrier last year, according to provisional data just released by ISTAC and Frontur Canarias.

Lanzarote’s popularity as a tourist destination continued to soar in 2017, as tourist arrivals rose by 7.9%, with a total of 3,146,117 holidaymakers touching down at Arrecife airport. April was the busiest month with 292,592 arrivals, whilst May was the quietest with 232,537.

The UK accounted for 46% of all tourist arrivals (1,452,141), dwarfing the next largest market Germany with 15% (474,587). And it is the British market which has been the prime engine of growth since 2010, as the number of holidaymakers visiting the island from the UK has grown by just over 80% over the last seven years.

Package tourism still accounts for largest slice of the Lanzarote tourist market, with 62% of all visitors booking combined accommodation and flight deals. The independent sector continues to grow apace however, accounting for 1,186,367 arrivals in 2017, up by 65% versus 2010 figures.

Many industry observers expect this rate of growth to slow in 2018, thanks to a combination of factors such as cheaper deals in reviving competitor markets such as Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt and the impact of Brexit.
