SAND STORM Playa Grande Lashed By Waves And Wind

One of the busiest and best known beaches on the island, Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen has been battered by stormy weather resulting in a significant loss of sand.

Storm Emma has wreaked havoc across the Canary Islands over the last couple of days, resulting in travel delays and low level floods in the capital. Whilst also hitting arguably the most important tourist beach on the island in Lanzarote’s busisest resort, Puerto de Carmen.

Unusually strong swells and waves along the coast have scooped large swathes of sand from Playa Grande out to sea or into mounds, whilst also damaging base sections of the main sea front promenade along with solarium and bathroom facilities.

Local authorities have fenced off the affected areas and will make a further assessment to plan repairs once current wind and wave conditions improve. The popular beach at Playa Chica further along the coast by the Los Fariones Hotel has also been subjected to similar damage.
