CABIN PRESSURE Arrivals Fall By 10% In January

Tourist arrivals on Lanzarote dropped by just over 10% year on year during January, according to the latest provisional data just released by FRONTUR.

A total of 222,283 tourists touched down on the tarmac at Arrecife airport during the first month of this year, down from 248,117 arrivals in January 2017. The bulk of these disappearing tourists was accounted for by a massive 33% drop in German arrivals. Whilst British arrivals also fell by nearly 6%. Only the Dutch and Irish markets showed any positive growth at all and domestic Spanish arrivals also fell by over 11%.

This drop in arrivals was not entirely unexpected, as the revival of the Red Sea resorts, combined with rock bottom deals in Turkey and Tunisia lured many of the so called ‘borrowed’ German tourists back to these competitor destinations. Suggesting that the 3m plus arrivals recorded in 2017 may prove to have been the high water mark for tourist visits to Lanzarote, news that will be welcomed by many local opponents of further ‘massification’.
