HOTEL INSPECTORS British Tourist Fraud Thwarted

A 25 year old British tourist could be enjoying a much extended stay here on Lanzarote after simulating a robbery in order to make a fraudulent insurance claim.

The tourist, initials K.B, was staying at a hotel in Costa Teguise and on March 5th reported the robbery of over 11,000 euros worth of valuables from his room. Claiming that gold and diamond jewellery was stolen whilst he was eating his breakfast in the hotel restaurant.

However his story quickly unravelled under investigaton by the Guardia Civil, who ascertained that his bedrooms third floor location made forced entry highly unlikely. Whilst the accused was also revealed to have taken out specific insurance for these items shortly before arriving on the island.

Once accused with simulation, the tourist admitted that he was in fact mistaken and the supposedly stolen items were never in fact packed in the first place. The simulation of a crime to defraud insurance companies carries a maximum sentence of twelve month’s imprisonment.
