HAIL CESAR Competition Marks César Centenary Celebrations
Plans are in the pipeline to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the island’s favourite son, César Manrique, in 2019.
César Manrique is largely credited with the reinvention of Lanzarote as a tourist destination during the 1960’s and 70’s and his work is evident everywhere on the island and his influence is such that local politicians have even proposed renaming Lanzarote’s airport in his honour.
Next year marks the 100th anniversary of his birth on April 24th 2019 and the island government plan to mark the date with a whole raft of events. Including the creation of a competition which will invite island residents to submit their own suggestions about how best to celebrate this landmark centenary, carrying cash prizes of 300,000 euros for the best submissions.
This competition will be thrown open to the public online in June via a new website, www.manrique100.org, which is currently under construction
