FOWL PLAY Turkey Gobbles Up Canaries Visitors

British tourists will be flocking to Turkey this summer, at the expense of the Canaries, according to the latest Travel Trends Report from Thomas Cook.

Canary Island’s hoteliers fears of an impending tourism disaster have been further fuelled by the recent release of the latest Thomas Cook Travel Trends Report. Which reveals that package holiday bookings for Turkey have soared by 86% year on year, outselling both mainland Spain and the Canary Islands combined.

Demand for holidays in the Eastern Med have been driven by rock bottom deals, priced as low as just 400 euros for an an all-inclusive stay in a five star resort. As destinations such as Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia scramble to recover domestic tourist markets which have been left decimated by years of conflict.

Canary Islands tourism chiefs have admitted that they have no chance of competing with these destinations on price. Whilst Lanzarote’s main Minister, Ángel Vázquez, has previously stated that, “A visitor who will not spend anything else outside the hotel and will not consume either our food and wine products, or leisure, or complementary offers is a tourist that does not interest us. The island does not need more tourists"
