ART UNDERGROUND New Basement Space For MIAC

Proposals are on the table for the creation of a new six million euro subterranean gallery space at Lanzarote’s Museum of International and Contemporary Art…

Lanzarote’s Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism are mulling planned proposals for the creation of a huge new 7,000 square metre space underneath the Castillo se San Jose in Arrecife, which is home to the island’s Museum of International and Contemporary Art.

This underground space would be arranged across three floors and would house a new gallery with sweeping views out to the bay of Naos, as well as other multipurpose a reception centre, ticket office and parking.

Architecturally, the expansion underground ensures minimal visual impact on the existing castle structure and is a resolution much in keeping with other visitor attractions on the island, such as the Jameos del Agua and the Cesar Manrique Foundation, which both boast subterranean spaces.

As is often the case, whilst these new plans have been reported in local media as yet there are no concrete project dates provided.
