SNUB AQUA Divers Shun Museo Atlantico
The number of divers visiting Lanzarote is swelling annually, but less than 5% are visiting the Museo Atlantico, the island’s purpose built underwater attraction.
Lanzarote is proving a magnet for dive tourists, attracting close to 180,000 sub mariners during the course of last year. But only a tiny proportion of them are diving in to the Museo Atlantico, an attraction that cost millions of euros to develop and which opened to much fanfare in January 2017.
According to data just released by the island government only 8,729 tourists visited the Museo Atlantico during the course of 2017, a figure that has fallen way short of expectations. And visitor numbers have dived further this year, with just 383 admissions recorded during February.
These figures suggest that awareness of Lanzarote’s latest attraction remains low, especially amongst the core market of UK divers who accounted for over 40% of all visits. And the Museo Atlantico will no doubt require more time and marketing exposure in order to gain greater traction.
