NORTHERN SOUL Haria Set For Heart Surgery

Will a multi-million euro modernisation plan enhance or erode the character of one of Lanzarote’s most emblematic enclaves?

The local council in Haria in the north of Lanzarote are embarking on a multi-million euro “transformation program”, which encompasses a raft of projects including the restoration of the Mirador de Haria and the Casa del Cura.

But the plans to modernise the historic heart of Haria, which plays host to the weekly market each Saturday, are proving a little more controversial. As some observers suggest that the development risks eroding the intrinsic charm and character of the village and its most public space, which some would prefer left as is.

The project for the transformation of the main square in Haria is being overseen by the president of Lanzarote’s Architects Association and has a provisional budget of over one million euros. With a stated aim of enhancing this central space by combining its historical value with contemporary architecture in the form of new signage for local businesses, enhanced planting that is sympathetic to the surroundings, the creation of new landscaped areas and integration of more modern street furniture.

All existing overhead electricity lines and visible cables will be carefully hidden and pedestrian areas will be amplified.

The local Mayor states “We intend to change the image of our spectacular historical center, enhancing its heritage and cultural values and creating a more friendly and attractive space as much for the residents as for those who visit the north of the Island."
