BRIT POP? UK Tourism Flags In June

British tourist arrivals fell by 11% in June as royal weddings, clement weather and the World Cup all conspired to dampen demand….

Arrivals from the UK, Lanzarote’s largest market, took a downward turn during June, according to the latest data released by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics. As a set of unique conditions combined to reduce arrivals from British airports, with 14,000 fewer holidaymakers disembarking at Arrecife.

The Royal Wedding, the World Cup and unusually good weather have all been cited as reasons why less British holidaymakers visited Lanzarote during June.  But according to ISTAC and the island government a longer term trend may already be discernible.   As according to a local tourism spokesperson, “It is true that the first six months of 2018 has shown a slight decrease, compared to the previous years, of visitors from key markets such as the United Kingdom and Germany, with arrivals falling by 11.5 and 6.1% respectively. But that percentage has been compensated with the arrival of Spanish, Dutch and French tourists, among others "

As a result, total tourist arrivals on Lanzarote have remained largely static during the first half of this year, versus 2017 figures, with visitor numbers up by just over 1% - a rate of growth that still compares favourably with other Canary Islands.
