STRIKE TWO Hotel Industrial Action Spreads South

Workers at the Princesa Yaiza hotel in Playa Blanca plan to strike in protest at delayed salary payments…

Industrial action by hotel workers looks set to spread from Costa Teguise, where pickets are already present outside the Be Live Lanzarote Experience to the five star Princesa Yaiza, located in the south of the island in Playa Blanca.

Both actions are being coordinated by the CCOO trade union and are in response to exploitative management practices. With cleaners and other workers at the Princesa Yaiza contending that salary payments are routinely delayed, resulting in hardship and distress for employees who need to meet mortgage and rental payments as well as other general living expenses. A problem that has apparently been allowed to persist for some years.

According to Union spokesperson Vanesa Frahija, "It is unfortunate that this happens in a five-star luxury hotel, where the occupation is practically 100 percent, and with the benefits of this establishment, workers suffer continuous delays in the payment of their payroll."

As a result protest rallies will be staged outside the main doors of the hotel on August 30th and September 11th, with strike action planned thereafter if a more concrete commitment of compliance from management is not forthcoming.

Unrest amongst hotel workers on Lanzarote in general has grown over the last 10 years. As worsening pay and conditions contrast with rising occupancy levels and profits, generated by a decade long tourist boom. Militancy is now on the rise, as hotel owners and management amass record profits with seemingly little regard for the well-being of their employees.
