CAR CRASH Goldcar Reputation Hits The Skids

Goldcar’s reputation has taken another wrong turn after reports of fraud surfaced in the UK media…

The reputation of Goldcar, one of Europe’s leading car hire firms, was driven through the mud by the Sunday Times last weekend. As the paper carried reports of fraudulent practices in offices across Spain and Europe.

Hordes of British holidaymakers have lodged official complaints against the company, a subsidiary of Europcar. Citing practices such as document falsification, unapproved credit card charges and high-pressure sales tactics. As a result, the company are now under investigation by EU authorities, who are conducting a wider ranging inquiry into the borderline business practices of all of the larger companies such as Hertz, Avis and Sixt.

We outlined the type of welcome tourists can expect at a Goldcar desk way back in December 2015 and it would appear little has changed since then.  Companies such as Goldcar are also now obliged to start publishing clear informaion about their charges online by the end of this year or face substantial fines.

Golcar has already been fined 2.5 million euros by Italian consumer protection agencies for aggresively pushing additional products such as insurance and for failing to explain their opaque fuel policies clearly.  UK Trading Standards are also taking an interest an an investigation into the company is ongoing.
